Emma Frank, LCSW

I have been practicing as a therapist for five years. I earned my MSW from Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College. While here, I focused on clinical services for LGBTQIA+ individuals. Since then, I have pursued postgraduate training in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy from NYCEFT and Somatic Experiencing from Somatic Experiencing International. All of my training connects to working with complex trauma, through attachment and relationally-oriented methods.

How I Work

My therapeutic style is rooted in affirming and compassionate care. I am honored to join you on your therapeutic journey. As we ask some of life’s hardest questions together, I will continue to remind you that you are not alone in your curiosity or confusion. Together, we will build a strong and trusting alliance, where the therapeutic relationship itself is an avenue towards growth and healing. To this end, I value a relational style of psychotherapy; we will dive into the relationships in your life, both past and present. Considering your unique presenting needs and attachment history, I will incorporate interventions that support the therapeutic journey that we embark on together.

I will integrate Somatic Experiencing as an opportunity to help you embody emotional experiences and move through unprocessed trauma. Somatic Experiencing can help us build an understanding of your nervous system and the stories it holds that go beyond cognitive memory.

For couples, I utilize Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) which can help us identify negative cycles in your relationship, build compassion around cycles of escalation,
and build new, positive cycles, rooted in love, connection, and empathy.

I work with people of all sexual orientations and gender identities, and specialize in working with the Queer and Trans community. I pull from Queer Theory and an Anti-Oppressive Therapy lens. These theories invite us to deconstruct shame in living outside of society’s binaries and roles, and invite us to remain curious about the impact of intersectionality and power dynamics on your sense of self and the world around you.

I have years of experience supporting clients who are exploring their gender identity, or are in the process of medical and/or social transitioning. I will integrate psychodynamic theory and parts work in order to invite all of your past ages and selves into the room with us. A question I will hold with tenderness throughout our journey together is, “How does it feel to be you?”

I will thoughtfully cater my therapeutic approach to who you are, and what you
need, with evidence-based short or long-term approaches.

Consults and Collaboration

I am skilled and experienced in navigating the worlds of psychiatry and medication management with my clients. If you want to find medication support alongside our work together, I will try to connect you with a prescribing provider with whom I have coordinated care in the past. Having your care team work in collaboration can feel like the most supportive and therapeutic way forward.
